Standard 7

Instructional Planning

The teacher organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, pupils, the community, and curriculum goals.
Rationale 7: According to state standards, students are required to study compare/contrast writings at the sixth grade level. Students choose two things they would like to compare and contrast. They will type their paragraphs using Google Docs. Google Docs enables students to share their writing electronically. Students read each other’s paragraphs and make comments on them. I also can give recommendations on grammar usage, spelling, and content. Students review all the comments received and submit their final paper via Google Docs.

7.K.2 The teacher knows how to take contextual considerations (instructional materials; individual student interests, needs, and aptitudes; and community resources) into account when planning instruction that creates an effective bridge between curriculum goals and students’ experiences.

Students compared items such as Blackberry Smartphones, types of shoes, and gaming systems. A student wanted his parents to buy him a new cell phone. He couldn’t decide which Blackberry he wanted, so he conducted research and wrote a paragraph to present to his parents. To utilize community resources, the local cell phone dealer near school may also visit to discuss the difference between phones. Students became excited to complete this activity because their individual interests were taken into account. Also, struggling students’ needs were met through the use of WordQ. WordQ enables all students to write independently. The program includes word prediction and voice recognition.

7.S.3 The teacher creates lessons and activities that operate at multiple levels to meet the development and individual needs of diverse learners and help each progress.

Google Docs helps meet the needs of all learning levels. Students type their paragraph into Google Docs and others can comment on it and give suggestions. WordQ also assists struggling readers and writers, allowing them to be more independent.

7.D.2 The teacher believes that plans must always be open to adjustment and revision based on student needs and changing circumstances.

If the teacher recognizes students need varying levels of support, accommodations should be made to best meet their needs. Once students show their interests towards a particular topic, the teacher must call on appropriate community members to contribute to the learning process.
